There are few things more Hamptons than spending $14 on tomatoes and feeling virtuous about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, the East End is packed with farmers\u2019 markets, roadside stands and pop-up markets where the produce is genuinely local, the corn was probably picked that morning and the person selling you the zucchini may have actually grown it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Westhampton Beach to Montauk\u2014and across to the North Fork\u2014here are 10 places worth bringing your reusable tote bag. Preferably one that doesn\u2019t say Bergdorf Goodman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Sag Harbor Farmers Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saturdays, 9 a.m.\u20131 p.m., through October 31<\/strong>
Bay and Burke Streets, Sag Harbor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set beside the Breakwater Yacht Club, the Sag Harbor Farmers Market has fresh produce, local seafood, baked goods, flowers, prepared foods and plenty of opportunities to run into someone before you\u2019ve had coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s charming, walkable and dangerously close to the rest of Sag Harbor\u2014which means your quick stop for lettuce could easily become lunch, shopping and an entirely unnecessary candle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. East Hampton Village Farmers Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

East Hampton\u2019s weekly market brings local farmers, bakers, florists and specialty-food vendors into the middle of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come for the tomatoes and artisan bread. Stay to see people exercising in Herrick Park while you eat a pastry. Everyone approaches wellness differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Montauk Farmers Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With more than 40 vendors, Montauk claims the largest farmers\u2019 market on the East End. You\u2019ll find produce, flowers, breads, seafood, specialty foods, wine and enough samples to call it lunch if you plan carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market runs into early October, although the weekday can change toward the end of the season. Check the schedule before driving east\u2014unless sitting in traffic is part of your wellness routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Westhampton Beach Farmers Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With dozens of farmers, fishermen, bakers and local producers, Westhampton Beach offers one of the biggest and longest-running market seasons on the East End.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a particularly good stop for anyone coming from points west. Buy your weekend provisions here and avoid discovering at 6 p.m. that the only thing in the refrigerator is ros\u00e9 and half a lemon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Southampton Farmers Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Southampton market combines local produce, prepared foods and handmade products with one of the prettiest locations on the South Fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also a civilized Sunday activity after a Saturday night that may not have been quite as civilized. A fresh juice and artisanal muffin can\u2019t erase the evening, but they\u2019re a start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Round Swamp Farm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday\u2013Saturday<\/strong>
East Hampton, Bridgehampton and Montauk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round Swamp is technically a farm market, but that description hardly covers it. The family-run business is known for produce, seafood, prepared meals, baked goods and desserts that have rescued more Hamptons dinner parties than anyone will publicly admit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can absolutely tell your guests you made everything yourself. Just remember to hide the containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Amber Waves Farm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Farm and market open daily, 8 a.m.\u20135 p.m.<\/strong>

Amber Waves is a nonprofit teaching farm, market, caf\u00e9 and community gathering place. It grows organic produce and flowers while offering educational programs for children, apprenticeships for future farmers and free access for visitors to explore the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also an East Hampton Farm Shop at 64 Park Place. In other words, you no longer need to leave the village to feel agriculturally responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Balsam Farms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

293 Town Lane, Amagansett<\/strong>
Additional market at 662 Montauk Highway, Montauk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balsam Farms began with 10 rented acres and a roadside stand. Today it grows across fields from Amagansett to Sagaponack and has become a favorite for corn, tomatoes, greens, herbs, flowers and other produce grown on the East End.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Amagansett stand also carries meat, dairy, baked goods and locally made pantry items. Balsam offers Friday home delivery east of the Shinnecock Canal\u2014because even your vegetables understand Hamptons traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Sang Lee Farms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over on the North Fork, Sang Lee Farms is a fourth-generation family farm growing more than 300 varieties of certified-organic vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farm stand carries exceptionally fresh produce, prepared foods and specialty products. It\u2019s an especially good destination if you\u2019d like to expand beyond the usual tomatoes and corn and try something you\u2019ll have to ask how to cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Harbes Family Farm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Open daily during the season<\/strong>
715 Sound Avenue, Mattituck<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbes is less of a farm stand and more of a full agricultural theme park\u2014in the best possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with its farm stand and famous sweet corn, you\u2019ll find apple cider doughnuts, a vineyard, family attractions and seasonal apple and pumpkin picking at its additional North Fork locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go for the produce. Stay for the cider doughnuts. Leave after realizing you\u2019ve eaten four of them in the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbes Family Farm<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Few Farm-Stand Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bring cash, although many vendors now accept cards. Go early for the best selection, but go later if you enjoy negotiating with a zucchini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that hours and inventory are seasonal and weather-dependent. A tomato does not care that you came all the way from Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, buy local. East End farms preserve open space, support local families and produce food that tastes considerably better than anything that spent a week traveling in a refrigerated truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
