HAMPTONS DINING IN THE TIME OF CORONOVIRUS!!

If you’re like me social distancing is starting to take a toll.   I’ve been cleaning my house and now I swear I’ve turned into a Hamptons gay Erma Bombeck or Prymate Conehead.  I hate housework, I hate cooking and I have nothing against a glass of wine at 12:01 pm.  In fact, I’m ready to throw in the towel with all of this domestic shit but I know that only means I’ll end of washing it.

But before I sound like I’m totally hausfrau, I want you to know I have a new attitude.  Kinda like Patti Labelle but with less dramatic hair.    I’m not cooking.  That’s right I’m not eating out but thanks to a few local folks who are braving the world to open their kitchens I can enjoy my meals again.    Seriously, this is great and I give these folks credit.   We all need to support local businesses in these troubling times.   So, get online or pick up the phone and order food to go from one these amazing places.  Besides you really don’t want another Stouffer’s lasagna anyway.

CHIRPING ABOUT CHICKEN WITH THAT ROSE… SHOULD IT STAY OR SHOULD IT GO?!

When buying or selling a home one of the most common questions I get asked (other than “Where is the property line? Duh, look where the neighbor stops mowing the lawn.”)  is what stays and what goes in the transaction.   Yes, I get asked if, “are they leaving the coffee maker, what about the runner on the stairs, the original Hockney over the fireplace and the water-pick in the downstairs master?”   You’d be surprised what some folks think they get to take and what others think should stay.    So, if that Clash song is going through your head, “Should I stay or Should I Go”   (and hopefully not because of that awful commercial for Choice Hotels) look no further, I have a legal expert here to sharpen the fuzzy details.

Douglas Moliterno is the founder of Hamptons Law,  a boutique law firm located in Amagansett specializing in real estate and estate planning law.   I recently had a chance to discuss with him some of the finer points of selling a home on the East End.   Here’s what he had to say:

FLAT SCREEN TV
THE FLAT SCREEN TV….  SHOULD IT STAY?
Q1 – Hi Doug,   often sellers and buyers aren’t exactly sure what stays and what goes with a home sale.  I usually tell people, if it’s nailed, bolted-in or or otherwise permanently attached, it stays.   Is that a good rule of thumb?
Good rule of thumb. I also use the term “built-in” to describe items that stay.

Q2 – What about wall mounted televisions?
A good rule of thumb is that the wall mounts are fixtures and should remain but the TVs are personalty and can go – always best to be clear up front as this isn’t a straight forward issue and the buyer and seller might have a different understanding of it.

Q3 – I recently had an awkward situation with a swing set.   Do they usually get included with a sale?

The swing-set should be included if it is bolted or cemented into the ground. If it’s not “attached,” then it should likely be considered personalty and can be taken by the seller – again, always best to clear this up from since it’s not always clear to both buyers and sellers

Q4 – I’ve also had people try to take the washer and dryer.   That’s usually included in the sale with most contracts?   Do buyers need to make sure they’ll be included?

Unless specifically excluded up front by the seller, there should be no question about whether a washer and dryer (and other major appliances are included) – of course they are part of the purchase.

Q5 –  What about bathroom mirrors?
My typical rule with mirrors is that they can be taken by the seller if they are hanging on hooks or nails, etc.; if they are nailed in or bolted, then they should remain.

Q6 –  What do sellers and buyers need to do to avoid these sort of problems?

Work with a good broker that knows what to look out for and knows which gray areas (wall-mounted TVs, swing sets) can cause problems/awkward situations down the road.  If not negotiated properly and clearly up front this can become an unneeded problem.

In the 80’s it was chicken wings, in the 90’s it was sushi and the 00’s it was cupcakes and Rose wine.   BUT WHAT DO DRINK WITH THAT CHILLED BOTTLE OF ROSE!?  What is the hottest food trend hitting the east end?  It might be hard to believe but the delicacy of the moment appears to be Fried Chicken!   I kid you not, in spite of the fact there is a line outside Soul-Psycho every week, those same spinners are are lining up and paying good bucks to chow down on Colonel Sander’s favorite dish.   But there’s no Colonel Sander’s in the Hamptons (thank god, it’s not as good as you remember) where is the proof?   Well don’t get your feathers ruffled and look no further than the lines at lunch time for Cromer’s Market in Sag Harbor.  Every Saturday the Fried Chicken is first to go and the hungry hungry hippos….err I mean Hamptonites are lining up to get their hands on this caloric delicacy.
Red Horse Market in East Hampton also specializes in a fried chicken that has become a favorite among some of the famous and non-famous locals.   No names mentioned but one is a late night talk show host.
EH GRILL
EH GRILL … FLYING CHICKEN!
For those with more epicurian tastes, the number one rated restaurant in the country Eleven Madison Park is offering a “Fried Chicken Feast” with coleslaw, rolls, potato salad, pickels, water melon and fresh baked pie all for the frugal price of $75 dollars a person.   By the way, reservations are required (hahahah good luck with that one) and shock of all shocks…. gratuity is not included.
East Hampton Grill which is arguably the most popular eatery in the Hamptons right now is also putting their feathers in the ring with their new “Flying Chicken” menu.   All summer long starting at 11 am, you can order their “Grandma Ding’s Cripsy Fried Chicken” to go.     Prices start at about $12 for 3 piece and buscuit lunches and go up to $48 for 12 pieces and 6 buscuits.    You can also get their famous cole slaw, tabbouleh salad and sodas and sparkling water to round out your poultry party pack.    The food is for take out…. and some limited seating in the restaurant.    Click here for more details.

AUGUST IN THE HAMPTONS… NO RESERVATIONS… NO PROBLEMS… THE BEST GOURMET TO GO!

Yes, it’s finally August in the Hamptons.     The water is warm.  The sun is shining.   Traffic is bumper to bumper on 27 with Range Rovers in full bloom.    While SoulCyle’s parking lot looks like a WWF pay per view.    But enough about all the things we cherish in the Hamptons during August. Instead lets talk about a major first world problem that so many of us know first hand,  the difficulties with getting a weekend restaurant reservation!

Yes, it’s the time of year when 25 minutes turns into 2 hours for a bar table.    It’s more than any south of the highway socialite should have to endure.   But luckily for you Paris, Kimye and all of the other society readers of Hamptons Chatter, you don’t have to suffer in silence any longer!   Here are a few ideas for getting gourmet meals in your very home without having to stoop to pizza or any sort of wonton that comes in a paper carton.

Free form lasagna from JK Chef Collection

1) Call JKChef Collection – 631-460-0010 – started by chef Jeff Purrazzi and Jack Kelly, the service has a stable of top tier chefs that come to you and and will handle the entire meal from soup to nutted apple tare-tatine.   According to Purrazzi, “The process of hiring a private chef is pretty easy.   We normally speak with our clients over the phone and get an overview of the families culinary likes and dislikes…

…. from the formal dining to the beach BBQ.  The key is to match the clients needs to the perfect chef.   Once we do that, we put the two together to create the perfect dinner menu.”    Prices vary based on the size of party and the duration of the event.   If you like more information you can visit their website www.jkchefcollection.com or give them a call at 631-460-0010.    Make sure to tell them Hamptons Chatter sent you!

Diners have been lining up at this East Hampton favorite for years.    But the real reason I’m mentioning this here is you can go online, check out the

4) East Hampton Grill – 99 North Main St. East Hampton – 631-329-1955 – Walk right by the crowd at one of the most popular Hamptons restaurants, step up to the bar and grab your grub and get out of there.     Yep, the home of the “heavenly biscuits” will pack your dinner for you to enjoy in your own kitchen.   The menu is available online and updated frequently.    While I’m not sure I would get the oysters to go (a little messy) from the fresh fish, to the roasted chicken and the french dip all are made from scratch daily and travel well.  But most important of all, the clean up is a breeze.

The french dip at East Hampton Grill – ask for horseradish!

So there you have it 5 ideas for the hungry agoraphobic in all of us.

Good News for Winos…. ehhhhem….. and WBAZ’s Walker Vreeland’ Musings About Life in the Hamptons!

I known you were all wondering, where is the latest Hamptons Chatter positing.    Well the truth be told, I was on a wine bender!    Yep, I went to Napa Valley and visited some amazing wineries “Silver Oak” and “Twomey” to name a few… ate the best taco I’ve ever tasted at a place called “C Casa”…. and had an amazing tuna burger at “R and D Kitchen” in Yountville (Owned by the Hillstone Group who run East Hampton Grill).    But alas, it’s back to sobriety and reality here in the Hamptons.

Lieb Vineyard’s New East Hampton location
But quicker than I could say “DT’s” there’s a new tasting room that just opened up in East Hampton.     Lieb Vineyards now have a tasting room at 26 Park Place.  Which in case you don’t recognize theat address it’s better known as behind White’s Pharmacy in the way back of the Walbaum’s Parking lot.   Now to be honest I’ve never tried Lieb wines but they’ve attracted quite a following on the North Fork and the reviews seem to be pretty outstanding.  In fact, they were awarded with Dan’s Best of the Best for having a great tasting room staff and a Pinot Blanc that apparently Hamptonians love.    So, who am I to argue… I’ll hopefully see you soon at the tasting room!
Speaking of Dan’s Magazine and the Best of the Best, WBAZ Radio personality Walker Vreeland has been nominated for best East End Personality.   I know I voted for him!     I’ve long been a fan of Walker’s and when he agreed to talk to me for Hampton’s Chatter, I was psyched.   He grew up here in the Hamptons and recently we discussed the changing Hamptons scene.   I hope you find this as insightful and enjoyable as I did.
