IT’S SNOWY AND I’M HOME SO I MIGHT AS WELL WRITE A BLOG POST. MAYBE I’LL START DOING MORE…

Summer is just around the corner, and if you’re a resident of East Hampton, now is the time to secure your parking pass for the village beach. Surprisingly, there are still 200 passes left for the summer of 2024, a rare occurrence as they usually sell out by this point. This presents a golden opportunity for those who haven’t yet secured their passes to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf hassle-free. Whether you’re a local looking to make the most of the beautiful East Hampton beaches or a visitor planning an extended stay, don’t miss this chance to guarantee your parking spot and make the most of the upcoming summer. If you’re a food enthusiast in East Hampton, your taste buds are in for a treat at Highway Restaurant. The restaurant is creating a buzz by featuring what I THINK IS THE BEST CHICKEN POT PIE every Wednesday night. But before you scoff, this is no Swanson TV dinner pot pie (which was often for dinner when I was a kid and mom wouldn’t cook). It’s a perfect blend of flaky crust, hunks of white meat chicken and a delicate and subtle gravy. They also give you a little bonus ramekin of gravy if you really like it floating. Seriously, CHICKEN POT PIE… three of my favorite things! The “pie” has been on and off the menu for years and after my whining for the past few…. they brought it back. Thanks Chef Justin! Make your Wednesday nights special by indulging in this culinary masterpiece at Highway Restaurant, and if it’s not the best pot pie you ever had, I’ll buy you a drink.

While Round Swamp Farms may be closed for a few more months, the good news is that you can still savor their gourmet dishes. Shelly Schaffer, one of the driving forces behind Round Swamp Farms, has ventured into a new project: Hub 44, a sports training facility that also serves the community with the famous Round Swamp-style food. Named “Hub Grub,” this culinary venture operates out of a commercial kitchen at The Hub, offering a variety of dishes three days a week. From appetizers to entrees and delightful desserts, the menu features both familiar Round Swamp favorites and exciting new creations. Is it good? It’s Round Swamp… you know it’s good. Check out Hub 44 on Tan Bark Trail by clicking here to see what’s on the menu!

NEW CHIEFS AND CHEFS FOR INDIAN WELLS TAVERN!

THE FINAL POW WOW IS AROUND THE CORNER FOR INDIAN WELLS.

The wagons have circled and it looks as though changes are a comin’ to Indian Wells Tavern in Amagansett. What is easily one of the most popular watering holes around will be shuttering its doors at the beginning of March. From what I’m told the Main Street location is in for a slight make over as the team behind Highway Restaurant takes over the reigns. The new establishment will allegedly stay pretty similar to the current “tavern” menu but with a slightly “higher end” flair. According to sources, (sources LOL, it almost sounds like I’m a real blog!) staff of the Tavern was told of the changes earlier this week. I only hope that with these changes current owners Kevin Boles and Chris Eggart carry their Wednesday Fajita Nights to either Bostwick’s locations.

Meanwhile on another night… I mean note…. it’s that time of year. Yes, permits for East Hampton Village beaches are now on sale. Every year I tell folks to do it early and EVERY year I hear how they ran out and you have to actually ride your bikes to the beach. The 3,100 permits usually run out around late March so get on it! You can click here to get all the details and apply for your permit online.

One word of caution for anyone who gets a permit. Last year I had damaged my license plates and had to get new ones with a new number. MISTAKE! I forgot my beach permit has the license plate number written on it and got a hefty $200 ticket. I tried to fight it but after two emails and one written letter I gave up. Learn from my mistake… you’re welcome.

FINAL THOUGHTS…. Why are there telephone poles on Wireless rd.?

IN PURSUIT OF POT PIES!

“The falling leaves, drift by my window.  The falling leaves of red and gold.   I see my a/c, it’s still cranking.   It’s Autumn time in New York.”      You may say you’re frightened by climate change but secretly you know you love these 75 degree days in November.    But in spite of the w

arm temperatures other signs of fall have definitely arrived.   The apple picking, the dog walks on the beach and of course for foodies like me (in the sense that I don’t hold my nose up at movie theatre nachos) prix fixes and new fall menus.

One of my favorite foods of fall is a good chicken pot pie.   This has been something I  discovered later in life since my early exposure consisted of a Swanson’s TV dinner.  In fact,  there are a more than a few things hated as a kid that I now love.  For example,  I hated steak for quite a long time due to my mother’s unsurpassed skill in killing a cow twice.    But like everything these days from macaroni to pasta, iceberg to arugula, donut to cronut everything seems to have a more epicurean slant.   Now, chicken pot pies are enjoying their moment in the spotlight and the competition for your fork is heating up.   I guess it’s also a case of everything old is new again.

The showdown occurs every Monday as Cove Hollow Tavern and Highway Restaurant are going head to head in a show down of puffed pastry poultry.      Both are homemade and both are about 100 steps above those frozen ones from your childhood.   Being a fan of both establishments, I can say you won’t be disappointed in either but the winner and still champion is….. the one at Highway.     Why?   It’s more. While both are tasty, Highway Restaurant’s is chock full of white meat chicken, more flaky crust and it’s a meal and a half.    Yes, I’ve taken mine home to go and finished it the next day for lunch.  Cove Hollow Tavern’s is more like a soup with a top of buttery pastry on top.   CHT pot pie is less a meal and more a nice appetizer.    Either way, I suggest you try both and judge for yourself.     Now if only both locations would figure a way to put these in a preformed aluminum tray with a side apple cobbler.   Now that would be nostalgic!

Meanwhile, I love getting my google alerts.    Some of the key words I get are “real estate, my name, Sag Harbor and Hamptons.”     It’s great, if you don’t do this you should.    I get the latest on market trends, business comings and goings and the latest felony charge for my namesake somewhere in the midwest.      Recently I got an alert that Vogue magazine has an article about some island in New Zealand that’s their (ha, I didn’t write there) answer to the Hamptons.  Its called Waiheke Island and I guess now we can say we’re “Long Island’s answer to Waiheke.”    So this had me thinking, what other parallels can me made about the East End?        Here are a few of my observations.

Bridgehampton Commons – The Rodeo Drive of the Hamptons – It’s all about the shopping.   Face it, where else can you actually walk for 100 yards and not hit a real estate office or bank?

Key West
Hanging out in Montauk… uh Key West!

Flanders – The Secaucus of the Hamptons – lots of waterfront property and a heck of a lot cheaper than if you drive 10 more minutes.

Montauk – The Key West of the Hamptons –  It’s the “end” and home to some of the besthangouts around.

Rt. 27 – The 405 Freeway of the Hamptons –  You hate driving on this road but do you have another choice?

Finally,  Greenport – It’s the Brooklyn of the Hamptons.    Hip, cool and too late to get a steal.
