So, I just have to add a few more restaurants to this list. I’m seriously sick of sitting home but these folks are making it a little easier.

I’m starting to feel like the Terence Malick of bloggers right now. In fact, I feel I’m in my “Tree of Life” phase, minus Brad Pitt and with even less enthusiasm from the audience. But as my fortune cookie said the other day, “you must try or hate yourself for not trying.” So here I am trying to bang out my ever so entertaining latest installment of “HAMPTONS CHATTER.” – crickets –
Anyway, what everyone seems to be really discussing in my part of the world is about how Sag Harbor has turned a corner. I’ve been nestled in Sag Harbor’s Main Street for the better part of 12 years (more on that later) and enjoyed it’s sophisticated small town feel. From the “five and dime” to home design stores to the Golden Pear coffee shop, it was “hello”… “good morning”…. “have a good day.” But as Whoopi said in the movie “Ghost,” – – “Sag Harbor, you’re in danger girl.”
The main culprit from what I hear is that “new restaurant” that shall remain unnamed. According to reliable sources, just because the place is empty doesn’t mean they want your unpretentious butt sitting at one of their tables. More than a few of my city and local friends have gone in only to be told, “we’re full!” Wow! I actually was curious and went to YELP to read some of the reviews. I swear I remember reading them and they were pretty much the same thing, rude staff that had more attitude than Katherine Heigle at a “Grey’s Anatomy” reunion. But guess what?! I went back to re-read these reviews (I wanted to post them here) and now I can’t find them! Now I don’t want to start any sort of conspiracy here but …. seriously… unless I’m totally losing it they’ve gone MIA. Anyway, I will ask is the food really that good? I’m not a masochist anyway and I doubt a serving of moules et frites will change my life. So, for now I’m happy going to the Sizzler Steakhouse.
My advice – – guys lighten up! The great thing about Sag Harbor is it’s a friendly town with not a whole lotta attitude. Yes, you’re the new kid in town and lots of overdressed and socially insecure people are posting tons of photos on Instagram, blah blah blah. “Look I got in and you didn’t!!!” But this stuff wears thin when most of us are busy worrying about more mundane things like our families, health and paying bills. Believe me the folks who are getting in WILL care when they’re the only people in the place. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be posting their dinners on line! “Look I got in… and I’m the only one here – because nobody really wants to be here” doesn’t have quite the same sexy allure. I’ve seen it before over and over in the Hamptons and it will happen to you too… too much attitude can be the kiss of death.
Meanwhile, I was getting my morning coffee at Goldberg’s in Wainscott – a friendly place but I don’t eat carbs (lying). When I came across the most interesting and delicious looking brownie. Now remember, I don’t eat carbs or sweets (lying again) but when I read the story about this amazing bakery I felt the need to eat… I mean contribute. It’s called South Fork Bakery. According to their website:
South Fork Bakery’s purpose is to provide meaningful and supportive employment to South Fork residents with ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorders, Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Employees are immersed in all aspects of the business, including baking, packaging, sales, marketing, and business management.
What a great idea and the brownies and cookies are great too (or so I heard – as I wipe brownie crumbs from my mouth)! If you want more information click here! You can also order products online. So do something good for others and enjoy. This stuff is better than moules et frites any day!
After more than 14 years in Sag Harbor I’ve decided to make a change. I am now so very proud to be a member of Sotheby’s International Realty in East Hampton. Located at 6 Main St. Make sure to note it in your yellow pages book extra page, rolodex and filofax. Now pick up that princess phone and give me a call. You can google the number.
Yes, it’s finally August in the Hamptons. The water is warm. The sun is shining. Traffic is bumper to bumper on 27 with Range Rovers in full bloom. While SoulCyle’s parking lot looks like a WWF pay per view. But enough about all the things we cherish in the Hamptons during August. Instead lets talk about a major first world problem that so many of us know first hand, the difficulties with getting a weekend restaurant reservation!
Yes, it’s the time of year when 25 minutes turns into 2 hours for a bar table. It’s more than any south of the highway socialite should have to endure. But luckily for you Paris, Kimye and all of the other society readers of Hamptons Chatter, you don’t have to suffer in silence any longer! Here are a few ideas for getting gourmet meals in your very home without having to stoop to pizza or any sort of wonton that comes in a paper carton.
Free form lasagna from JK Chef Collection
1) Call JKChef Collection – 631-460-0010 – started by chef Jeff Purrazzi and Jack Kelly, the service has a stable of top tier chefs that come to you and and will handle the entire meal from soup to nutted apple tare-tatine. According to Purrazzi, “The process of hiring a private chef is pretty easy. We normally speak with our clients over the phone and get an overview of the families culinary likes and dislikes…
…. from the formal dining to the beach BBQ. The key is to match the clients needs to the perfect chef. Once we do that, we put the two together to create the perfect dinner menu.” Prices vary based on the size of party and the duration of the event. 2) Saaz -1746 CR 39 Southampton – 631-259-2222 – Gourmet Indian food that in it’s short in town has garnered a large and loyal following. The location is easy since it’s virtually the first restaurant you see as you drive into the Hamptons. The full menu including a slew of vegetarian dishes is available online and they even deliver to a large chunk of the east end. So skip the pizza and go for some steamed chicken somos instead!
Salmon Tartare – Fresno
3) Fresno – 8 Fresno Place East Hampton – 631-324-8700 – New American cuisine at it’s best. Head Chef Gretchen Menser’s rotating menu of classic crowd pleasers with an epicurean twist is why updated menu and get your tilefish or osso bucco to go! Diners have been lining up at this East Hampton favorite for years. But the real reason I’m mentioning this here is you can go online, check out the
4) East Hampton Grill – 99 North Main St. East Hampton – 631-329-1955 – Walk right by the crowd at one of the most popular Hamptons restaurants, step up to the bar and grab your grub and get out of there. Yep, the home of the “heavenly biscuits” will pack your dinner for you to enjoy in your own kitchen. The menu is available online and updated frequently. While I’m not sure I would get the oysters to go (a little messy) from the fresh fish, to the roasted chicken and the french dip all are made from scratch daily and travel well. But most important of all, the clean up is a breeze.
The french dip at East Hampton Grill – ask for horseradish!
5) The Seafood Shop -356 Montauk Highway, Wainscott – 631-537-0633 – Yes you can buy your shrimp and your fresh fish for home cooking but you can also get a complete dinner on the fly without breaking a sweat. Lobsters, grilled fish and fresh salads and even a chicken breast sandwich are all on the take out menu. It’s a complete menu available online that is updated with specials daily and diverse enough for even the finickiest of diners. It might not be fancy but the food is awesome!
So there you have it 5 ideas for the hungry agoraphobic in all of us.
One of the things I like least about summer in the Hamptons is the crowds. While I’m not an agoraphobic, the idea of dealing with traffic and pushy patrons is sometimes more than I can handle. Besides, I get extreme guilt leaving my dogs behind… because they like to party as much as the next animal. So, unlike NYC where you can have a cup of coffee delivered for free, finding door to door service out east is a little more difficult. Virtually nobody delivers in the Hamptons. I know White’s Pharmacy delivers… but cough drops and Metamucil don’t quite satisfy my hunger like they should. What do you do when your cupboards are bare, traffic is backed up and everybody is hungry? Well, here’s the skinny on getting chubby without leaving home…..
There are two.. repeat only TWO Chinese restaurants that I think are worth the weight in MSG. Number 1 (631-726-8080) in Water Mill and Pheonix in Wainscott (631-537-0011). There are a few others in the area but one of them actually has Immodium on the menu which to me is a big red flag…OK I’m kidding. While my two recommendations aren’t exactly Shun Lee or Mr. Chow’s, they’re both good, hearty and reasonably priced. My personal favorites are the “scallion pancakes” at Pheonix and the “spicy chicken and broccoli” at #1. Both are the best Chinese delivery in the HAMPTONS! Although, that’s kind of like saying it’s the friendliest restaurant in France.
When it’ comes to Pizza. There are no Domino’s in the Hamptons. Which is a good thing. But darn it, why is it so hard to get a pizza brought to your door on a rainy Saturday night!? Well there are only a few choices for delivery pizza at a good price. In Montauk, you have Sausages (631-668-1144) .. In Bridgehampton there’s American Pie (631-613-6177) in the Commons and Southampton has Paul’s (631-283-1861) and Melrose East. In East Hampton you have Pizza and Things Spring’s Pizza. Customers like it for their reasonable prices, friendly staff and fresh ingredients (631) 324-7974.
Also in East Hampton, the Red Horse Market will deliver groceries or prepared foods with a $100 minimum purchase. I’m pretty sure you can get them to bring one of their pizzas to the door as well. By the way, throw a fresh mozzarella in there for good measure and melt some extra on the pie.
If you’re looking for something a little more exotic you can try Saaz in Southampton. They deliver and according to some, they’ll go all the way to East Hampton. That’s a good thing too since the New York Times raved the food is “uniformly excellent… a long overdue addition to Hamptons dining.” Saaz – (631) 259-2222 – is located just as you come into Southampton on CR 39 at the former site of Mason Ole – where Montezuma always got his revenge! Saaz is a much better welcome to the east end!
While I’m sure there are others that may deliver, this is the list I came up with based on my own personal experience and those I know around town.
